I am really having a bad time with spammers . I have a niche directory which is as specific as it gets . I still get idots submitting their herbal sites to web directories and that too in all the sections. Mostly medical related sites , idiots

Yes, this is a problem that everyone running a directory has, sometimes it's worse than other times. I have several tools on my directory that allow me to deal with this though.

Don't let it bother you, it comes with the territory. :)

I think it's part and parcel of being a directory owner. If only people were to submit the correct site to the correct category with suitable title and good and unique descriptions........

I would really recommend anOn's mod "spam guard"
That is the best solution for your problem.
Rob knows how much i was pissed off with SPAM listings.
Life now, is much better after i got the mod installed on my directories :)

you wanna fry their butts ?? :D

Their is a good article in phpLD forum about using multiple Submit.php, try that, i think it would help decreasing spam a bit.

yeah, I have these James and Alex submitting things like "Cheap Calling Card" to my health niche directory... they also submit crap pharmacy sites to my Hairloss category...

I keep banning their ips but it seems they have too many different ips...

On the topic of niche directories I think you should maybe include a couple of general 'catch-all' categories for other types of sites that might not be directly related.

i did that actually , perhaps more out of monetary reasons as someone payed me via paypal , so i actually did put up a other sites , to some perhaps allied sites. however the junk submissions happen in all the sections, its really annoying.

Then what's the point of calling it a niche directory?

Sometimes with this kind of directory you can make good use of a word filter. It really depends on your topic, but there are some words that you can guarantee will appear 99% on spam submissions.

There are other words which suggest a submission may be spam, but aren't enough on their own: an example for your fishing directory would be "loans", which might appear on the description for a hire shop for fishing equipment. In cases like this, a more sophisticated points-based filter is helpful: award one point for every word or phrase that suggests spam, and if there are several of these, stick the submission in the bit bucket.
