Curious how people handle old posts that get zero clicks for a year. Some say merge them into a stronger page with a 301, some just noindex, some delete and let them 404. What has actually worked for you, and how long did it take to see any change?
I usually start by checking whether the post still matches what people are searching for. If the topic is still relevant but the content is thin, I would rather update and expand it than delete it, because it often already has some history and internal links. Merging makes sense when several short posts cover almost the same question, so the combined page is genuinely more useful. I only delete, with a redirect where appropriate, when the topic is outdated or no longer accurate and there is nothing worth saving. Noindex feels like a temporary step to me, not a fix, since it leaves the weak content in place.
I agree with CadoJP here, especially the point about checking whether the post still matches what people are actually searching for. When I run these audits, I also look at whether the page gets impressions even with zero clicks, because if Search Console shows it appearing for queries, the page is at least ranking for something and is usually worth expanding instead of deleting. One thing I would add to the merge approach: before you merge, check which of the short posts has the strongest internal links pointing at it, and make that URL the one you keep as the final merged page, so you don't lose the value those links carry. And if you do delete with redirects, I would do it in smaller batches. A big wave of 301s at once can spike crawl activity, so it is easier to watch what happens when you go in groups. Since your posts have no backlinks and zero clicks for six months, merging the related ones into one genuinely more useful article looks like the safest bet of the three. Do you check which internal pages link to each old post before deciding which URL to keep as the final one?
On a small blog I'd leave most of them alone tbh. Zero clicks for a year on a low traffic site doesn't tell you much, I'd only touch the ones that overlap with a newer post and merge those.
