    Hi,

There are so many directories out there on the internet and I was just wondering why. Is it lucrative...do you make much money from it?

    regards,

Sure, just make sure you have a high ranking directory. Having a lot of traffic to your directory makes it even more lucrative to have submissions to it -- more traffic. Directories aren't there purely for pagerank benefits or link popularity, but traffic as well. A good directory provides both traffic AND link popularity benefits.

Yes, I suppose if you have a direcoty in a very popular subject/niche and it's very active, then people wouldn't mind paying you to be listed by your directory. But how many directories really fall into this category? There seems to be directories into the thousands on the internet.

    Regards

There are a lot of key components of a directory which determine whether you'll make money or not.

Link Lasso makes a good amount. We put a lot of that money back into advertising though.

I think these days your directory needs to cater for a niche market, there's thousands of general directories, but only a few for very specific topics.

That's the key to getting better paid ads IMHO.

My goal with my directory isn't to make money from the directory itself, it's to encourage link trading which increases the popularity of the rest of my site. Directories are useful for that. (I agree of course that it's important to specialize.)

If its a really high ranked directory you can charge people to add their sites.

So, it sounds like the key is to have a directory with a high PR...then you can start charging for links. But, to achieve all this you probably need to have a niche directory not a general directory because there are so many of those already on the internet. Have I got that right?

yup..that's exactly it. You can do this with a general directory too, but it would be a lot harder ..with a niche one you can really be successfull

Pick a niche though that is going to get some interest, you don't want to be too specific. For example, I would not run a specific "motorcycle tours niche directory". I would though consider a "motorcycle niche directory" or a "tours niche directory". That way the doors are a bit more open without losing the focus of the niche.

It would be wise to skin the directory with something other than the out of the box template. They are useable but dead ugly, and an ugly site is not going to attract interest. Further, a default site template will give the impression your not that committed to the market, so why bother submitting. Most of the major scripts out there have some killer templates, or are easy enough to skin on your own. Invest the time and get it looking the way that you like that compliments your market niche.

Another good alternative is to use a directory as part of a wider portal. For example, if your chosen niche is a tours site then you may wish to have a tours blog and directory sitting side by side. This should draw people in to foster discussions, and once there they can explore the directory to find some targeted suppliers. I am currently working on one such niche project, more on that will come out soon.

I earn a little from my directory, but nothing to celebrate about. However, I predict that once the next PR update rolls around I'll see substantially more listings/visitors/ ie profit coming through the doors.

Right now, I'm investing every dime earned into marketing. I'm thinking long term, so for right now, NO I am not making anything off of it.

I've got a couple and all make some money, atleast enough to pay for them and the hosting which is all that really matters right now. Soon, they will be bigger money makers when their PR gets higher
