Do you like .info domain names?

I am just curious what others thoughts are on the .info domain extension. I can't explain why, but they drive me nuts. I guess because I see so many spammy sites using that extension because the names are cheaper than .com names.

Hopefully I have not offended the large amount of users surfing this forum that use the .info extension for their websites. That is not my intention.

Do .info names bug you too or do I need help?

Do you think the casual internet user that surfs into a website from a search engine ever notices the URL or domain extension?

I am personally rather disgusted with the lack of enforcement of the correct use of domain areas. .com for commercial, .org for non-profit, .net for anything, ect. With out any kind of enforcement, what's the point of having the extensions in the first place? So… I guess my answer to your question is yes.

Since so many were given away initially they seemed to attract alot of mfa and less than stellar sites.

Prefer .com or the regional equivalent but if they're gone they're gone.

I have a successful .info and apart from confusion when giving out the email addy it's never been a problem.

I don't like it, especially since it's 4 letters. How about .nfo or .inf? I think there are too many TLDs with little point.

I don't have a problem with them although I have noticed most of my comment spam has links to .info domains.

I prefer .com of course, but I would take .info over some of the other more obscure sounding extensions (like .bz for example).

My experience is that regular people don't even register what the domain name is - which is why the phishing crowd employ the dodgy url tactic.

Well, I feel better now because it doesn't sound like it's just me. I don't seem to mind the other tld's. .info just bugs me.

I think we would all agree that we would prefer to have the .com extension if it were available for our given domain name. Thanks for your input.

What are your thoughts on the 2nd part of my question(listed below).
Do you think the casual internet user that surfs into a website from a search engine ever notices the URL or domain extension?

I watch my wife and my mother surf and they just seem to click away without any regard for the name of the website they are on.

I typically base the credibility of the webpage on several factors including the design, domain extension, and pagerank.

For example, A poorly designed webpage with a .info extension with no pagerank would have less credibility in my mind.

These probably aren't the best factors, but at least it's better than the shotgun approach that I think most surfers use.

So, Do you think the casual internet user that surfs into a website from a search engine ever notices the URL or domain extension?

I think the casual user bases it on design (including white space), ease of use, discreet adverting and quality of articles.

Most haven't heard of pagerank (and new sites can be just as good as old) and domain means little. I'd rather go to mysite.info than my--site.com or mysite4u.com for instance.

It may seem to be a shotgun approach but you'll find users come to the same conclusions as the rest of us, they just take a different route.

I don't like .info names at all. Everytime I see a site with that extension, I instantly assume it's a bad site. I don't really know why, but it just seems like it's usually true.

I cannot be bothered for there is lack of developed .info sites that I seldom have the chance to come across them to begin wih.

Because of such a low registering price for .infos most of .info are spammy sites. That is just my observation and i have not experimented or anything. I think everyone including general public like .com and info isnt very popular yet :)
