Do you leave comments on your direct competitors' sites?

    Actually, the subject :)

Have you ever tried to leave a comment on your direct competitor's website or blog, with your link advertising and e-mail? I feel embarassed as I cannot imagine what is the reason for that. The owner would definitely delete if not the comment, than the link and e-mail. At least, I do that. I cannot only understand why do these ppl do this :) Do you have an idea?

I would and wouldn't think twice about it. Its kind of like people advertising their webmaster forums here on DP. DP is so big it doesn't really even phase them, but they are still trying to lure people from here to there. I don't see a problem with that.

Someone published an irrelevant promotion of the coats he sells on my Comedy Problem Page. I left it there but anwered the private email I made out he'd sent me about his problem underneath. I can't remember what personal problem of his I wrote about but my intention would have been to embarrass him as much as possible and have some fun.

If I was selling a product or service I don't think I'd give space to posters.

Sure. It's like if Mercedes would place an ad "I know a great place where you can buy a superb car! bmw.com"

Drives me mad :) The same competitor tried to post the same ad on my blog) twice a week) seems like he's getting a habit

some of my competitors are my friends from an open source community I belong to. So my answer is yes, because I truly believe there is enough business for everyone, and I wouldn't be commenting to steal their clients, I would be commenting to show my support for their site!

I do it all the time, with no problem. Most of the big guys in my niche don't allow comments on their blogs, but I comment on other blogs all the time.

What's the problem? IF they delete your comment, then that means that they are scared of you...its a good thing:)

I have never attempted to do this before, it may be a good tactic though.

Posting something related is ok. I allow such posts, for example, if I write about diabetes, and some med. or diabetes website owner takes my article, places it with a link to me, and posts his link on my blog. It's ok. But not when you direct competitor tries to advertise the same services (which are, however, international, not local ones) on your website) Seems funny.

Btw, I have never saw site focusing on sales, not on news, or some social content, encouraging competitors to place their ads.

I believe, there is enough business for everyone, and there is enough space for everyone, so let they go somewhere and post their ads somewhere else, no? :)

I leave comments on blogs and articles that relate to my topics, but sometimes they have no-follows.

Btw, my wordpress blog also has no-follows. Doesn't help :) Seems somebody likes to remind me they are just behind the corner. To a certain extent I like it, because my site is less than one month old :)

    I believe in healthy competition.
I am guilty of this from time to time.

It's a big market out there,if your confident in your product clients will come.
The key is to never look weak... take everything with a grain of salt. :)
