I did a first aid course about two years ago. I wish i had done a refresher because yesterday my grandchild was choking on a lolly and I'm embarrassed to say I panicked and was not much help at all!! It was my husband who saved her by doing the Heimlich Procedure on her and up came the lolly. I don't know whether it was because it was someone close to me that i panicked or what but i was shaking forever after when i thought about what could have happened. So i am interested to know how many at dp know first aid?
I am a St John Ambulance First Aid trainer and assessor (one of many strings to my bow). (PS. We call the Heimlich manoeuvre an 'abdominal thrust' nowadays)
i think now they teach these things at school. I don't know first aid, would love to learn it though.
First aid is essential knowledge everyone should know how ! But in your case since you panicked it was better that you were of no help. If you panic it is better to just leave things alone and let others take care or call for help...
As long as the life was saved.. Nice job hubby. I am a foster parent, and we have to have CPR and First Aid training.
No, that's called the Holger-Nielsen method. Excuse the spelling - it's probably wrong - but that technique went out with the ark!
The basic First Aid technique that everyone should know, is "to get help" if you can't react on your own. This is what is taught as one of the first tenets in BLS (Basic Life Support) other wise known as CPR.
Yep - Have a Senior First Aid certificate. I redo mine every 2 years. I also carry a major trauma first aid kit in my car which came at considerable cost to me but you just never know when you might need to use it. Thankfully i've never had to use my skills, but hopefully I can help someone if & when the time comes. Highly recommended. If you find you can't remember your training its a good idea to redo it.
Good advice. It's a fast changing subject and there's always a new way (much to our annoyance) of teaching things. The only downside is that it can be quite expensive - like £200 ($400) per student for a full First Aid at Work (FAW) course here in the UK. I don't know how these trainers sleep at night charging that much
Yeah it certainly does change rapidly. Here in Australia the recommended/approved CPR technique changed considerably. Same rules for both adult & children now to keep it simpler and easier to remember. We don't even bother to check for pulse anymore, the logic is if you're not breathing its only a matter of time before your heart stops anyway. Precious seconds wasted trying to find a pulse which can be very hard on some people.
I did senior First Aid through Saint Johns and work paid for it but I guess I need to refresh (I did remember the training after) Thats the worst part not knowing whether i will freak out again. I think it was just because it was one of my own.
I had first aid training, but it was a few years ago and I'm not confident that I would remember it. My sister tells me that they've changed the breathing/compression ratio recommendation for CPR and it's now much different than it used to be. I think I could still do the abdominal thrust, as that one is a lot easier to remember after you learn the correct hand position.
