Counters are very 1999. I usually won't even include a site in my directory if it has a visible counter, I think it's in such poor taste. By all means keep statistics, but keep them to yourself. They are of no use whatsoever to your visitors, and are easily faked.

Counters are a useless piece of web clutter, and you will be better off saving the prime real estate of your front page for something more important.

To me stats are very important to know. How will you know where your site is performing without them? But I do not like the visible counters - the stats are to help the webmaster and are of no use to the visitors. I use awstats provided with cPanel as well as Google acct.

True, but i wonder it will be helpful for customer/visitor which want to purchase or submit a link on the directory, somehow, the counter give some confidence to customer/visitor, giving a impression(true impression and true stat) of visitor so far. And he/she will proceed to submit with confidence.

Maybe in another word, some might be showing fake counter, but not sure how it work?

In my opinion most will think that a hit counter indicates an amateur webmaster. As for instilling confidence in a potential submitter to a directory PageRank value would probably be the most effective.

I suppose that in the end it is up to the webmasters preference.

I just use Google Analytics and it works great for me. Although their new layout is pretty lame.

If you're talking about placing a visable hit counter on your site I would say no. Like already mentioned it looks amateurish.

Now I do like to see a directory's statistics when I visit. To me this gives some indication if it's active or not. I looked at a directory advertised here today and noticed it had 480 active links and 1900+ pending links. Humm, this told me the owner isn't minding the store and editing and approving/disapproving submissions and probably not worth my time/money.

As far as having acurate stats available , the information is indispensible. I think it's important to know where your vistors are coming from and some info about them.

We are using AWstats on all of our sites. It is included into hosting package so no extra effort to install or configure it at all. And the stats it shows are more than enough.

Is it ok for G, if the statcounter put as invisible? For what i know, it is not recommended or it is bad to have an hidden link, similar to invisible.
