I don't own any servers, but i am hosting all my websites on dedicated servers. My business associated have rented lot's of dedicated servers. If you don't belive me, send your website and i will crawl it from 5000uniq IPs
More so in ways if you ask me, as long as you're with a reputable company and have your settings secure, etc. I went to dedicated finally after years of standard hosting and reseller accounts. Yes it costs more money, but having websites that load so much faster, less downtime, etc. It pays itself off and then some! My orders are way, way up since going dedicated and VPS. Both solutions are decent, VPS is not bad if you're with a good company. Servint so far has been very good, fast load times, excellent up times, etc. I had a VPS as Power VPS as well and that one hasnt' been so well.
No, I do not have my own dedicated host. I have a friend who does have a dedicated host for his webcomic though, and all it costs him is an old beat up tower, some time setting up a floppy disk version of linux, and the cost of getting a static IP from his internet provider. He also has a router that he's set up to forward all HTTP service requests to that webserver box.
I have 2 dedicated servers..One in Layered Tech DC other in Softlayer costs me around 350$ per month but it's worth it..Fast Speed of site more sales etc.. Saad
Nope i don't have a dedicated server , it approximately costs 150 - 250$ a month depending on your config.
I agree The speed of sites are so much faster on an almost idle dedicated server than a reseller account on a server that's been over sold. No need to worry about others over taxing the server causing outages, slow loads, etc. Pays for itself!
I use a single dedicated root server managed server are in those a.m. $ ranges if you are experienced and can to root server then you are your own support and can find an excellent root server for around 80 us$ / m with excellent HW far above any shared hosting. i recently moved to root server and received a surprise benefit from moving out of US to European server - i instantly lost all censuring that is common in some 40 countries and apparently is more applied to hosts with US based IPs - an instant 30+% generic traffic increase resulted from my server move US to EU late October 2006 I regret to have waited that long to move to root server speed and many other benefits are huge and definitely priceless instant support another benefit total server control, improved security, and many other features only avaiable to root servers by far outweigh additional responsibility and work
Your own server should costs anywhere from $1500-8000USD for a okay to an excellent server. That is just the hardware. Then you need software windows or unix. Unix is free of course but can be head ache unless you have LOTS of experience/time. Then you need a dedicated IP with decent bandwidth, this totally depends on your ISP but can be anywhere from $100 -1000 per month. If you are a low end user then you might be able to get away with $50-60/month. Costs decrease as you buy more IPs, sort of like a bundle deal but bandwidth increases. Maintenance of the hardware won't be a problem as long as you buy a good server. I've had server last 7+years without doing anything to them. Hope that helps. Remember if you go cheap on the hardware/server it won't go unnoticed.
