you might be able to find some interesting images on flickr -creative commons or 123rf.com -look for free images, however you must give proper attribution

Haven't tried this one yet, but checked the licensing details for one of the random photos. This phrase, in particular, got me a bit confused, if I'm allowed to modify the pic if I need to, or not, and whether it's really legal to use it for commercial purposes:
Your fair dealing or fair use rights, or other applicable copyright exceptions and limitations.

Accidentally reach this website, http://mayang.com/textures/. It offers free textures for commercial use. Just for sharing. :)

[h=4]Use:[/h]They are free to use for all uses, whether commercial or non-commercial (you may incorporate them into your derived work with no requirement to pay us any licensing fee etc). Your derived work must involve significant modification to the textures. It would be nice if you could credit us.

Checked it, not bad if to consider that the authors have taken all the pictures themselves, thanks for sharing

Of course, hiring a designer is always a way out, but a) you've got to pay well to get a creative and skilled one b) the designers will often use the samples from sites and modify them c) what if you're a beginner-designer yourself?
