I left school at 15 and I'm now 17 and getting a diploma in Technical Support in the next 2 years (2 year course) and then aiming for a degree in software development maybe game development later on down the line.
And what do you work as?? I have a BA -_- not sure if a MA is going to change anything to it. What do you think?
My thoughts are this. A college degree is important if you want to get into the corporate world. Realistically, the degree does not make that much of a difference. Most of the time, people just want to see if you have initiative to begin and stay committed to finishing something. The challenge with the education system is that it does not foster a thirst for learning. It is a memorization of facts. At 38 I will say I have become quite successful in the online world. I can hold a strong debate with marketing experts and owners of companies. I dropped out of college after 3 years. My goal is to be back in school this year.
I am still in college but I don't think I'll continue to work in the same field as my interests have changed a lot.
Yes. And, various other such things and certifications. Ironically, 25 years later I find the value in what they said about GUR (General University Requirements) the most notable. That is, being a literate person with a well-rounded (well, rounded anyhow) view on the World. Socially, it is an experience that remains also. Open doors and prepare for actual work? That is a little harder to identify, and as hinted, it was not the end of learning and proving that I could do the work. My brother has four degrees including a PHD in Plant Pathology. He would have become a milliionaire from the computer/software revolution (the timing was right, his first degree was in Math for a high end U, and he built our computer in 1977), but instead he works for a Professor with a year-to-year grant, low paid, and no job security. Fortunately, that situation has been continuing for decades now.
i have a college degree but to be honest I don't think it really has much relevance for me today. In a way college seems like a big waste of time
