do you guys get a lot of this? i don't know.. there seem to be a lot of them. I thought maybe something wrong with my submit form.. and i tried a few times.. it seems ok to me... maybe people just don't get the concept of directory submission... no problem for me.. i just reject them all.. i'm just baffled as to why this could happen..
there is a mod to check the length of the description. You can use that to avoid spammy submissions. if you still get submissions without desc after using the mod then there is a problem with your site.
From a submitter standpoint... If someone cares about the site they are submitting they are going to either type in a description or take half an hour to install some auto-fill software that will in the end save countless hours. My recommendation to sites that don't have descriptions: Look over them real carefully and if they don't pass a high-quality test, I'd dump them. As I said, if the site owner doesn't care to write in the sites description they don't deserve a listing.
yeah... there are quite a bit of spam in there.. i'm weeding it out slowly though.. most of the stuff are from the previous owner.. i'm more selective when approving.. which is one of the reason i have a 4000 submissions approve queue i don;t really want to put in a captcha.. i figure it is something that I hate therefore something i don;t want to put my visitors through..
Me too, every around 100 of that, and I'm worse than you, I also got descriptions with non english and html code.
My script filters them out. You just have to make sure your script is set to up correctly, so the submitter is prompted to fill in all the fields before it goes through. It's also a good idea to set a minimum length because ultra-short descriptions aren't much use to anyone.
When I had my directory, I did as you are stating and then the spammers started to just put in a bunch of question marks. Spammers are going to find ways to spam no matter what. The CAPTCHA is the best way to handle most and other ways on some scripts is to ask for email verification. It is a shame that directories, blogs, and forums, are be ruined by these scumbags. It is ok to build back links but at least they should add something of value to where they want to link from.
I do but I dont submit any, if the user cannot be asked to describe their own site then I will not submit.
if you have sql knowledge then you can open the database and clear out all invalid links which have no descriptions in one shot. but it is risky if you made mistakes. take necessary backup if you are willing to.
