Gotta know literally everything there could possibly be about lifting before lifting. Going to the gym for even an hour without having read Starting Strength 100 times and done years of research on programming, nutrition, etc. would be at best a waste and at worst instant death.
If your heart is healthy dying from lifting weights is virtually impossible. I first starting pumping iron with my friends when I was very young. Almost 30 years later I am doing this again at the comfort of my small home gym. Feels great. The trick about weight lifting is that you need to eat right if you want to gain mass. The last two months I literally doubled my food consumption. You eat protein based foods before the training and carbohydrate based foods after. Again, eat big to get big.
