Do you give time limits on free software support?

    Hi,

Just now an old project opened up finding a bug after the client wanted to do something new with the site. Basically what's done before was already approved, but now they see it as a bug.

Do you set like a 6-month or a year of free support for your application after it's done? I just find it difficult to deal with an old application that I've forgotten, I had to look back to the old notes, manuals, etc just to find out what went wrong - and all that I had to do for free.

If not, do you have other ways of dealing with this? I know I must support my application but very very old and outdated applications suddenly demanding support seems a bit unfair to spend time in...

firstly you need to clarify your terms, if you support your app for free, you need to do, and vice verse.
in the most cases, i don't do it, because there is not a terminal station for software development, it is better to charge basis hour or day or month.
    good luck!

I usually give between 2-6months free bugfixes depending on language it´s build in..

But if it was approved back then and they start using the code for something else it´s a new project.. so i would charge them for it.. since you can´t be sure if they have changed anything related to it, and that is the reason the bug appeared..

Always set a timelimit on the free support / free bugfixes.. Then you won´t have to deal with stuff like this..

I don't write software much these days, but O usually gave them a period of one year free support. After which, I would ask them to either upgrade to a newer version or charge them for any further support.

It is always advisable to have up-to-date versions of your software for scenarios like these.
