Do you give more importance to a domain name by ending with dot com?

Suppose, you want to register a domain name. Now, in that case, will you
first look out for a name ending with dot com or what exactly is your first
    choice?

    Yes of course.

dot com is good for branding..

Yes, I do. Even though SEO wise the TLD is unimportant.

Absolutely - .com is better than any other TLD, generally speaking.

The actual level of importance varies though, depending some factors - where your traffic is coming from, being an important one.

If your site is spreading through word of mouth, traditional media, etc, then you have to have a .com name, basically - Because people will automatically type in .com when they go to visit your site. Doesn't matter if their friend specifically said "go to blahblah.net". Its an automatic reflex to type in .com.

If you're getting all your traffic from backlinks, search engines, etc, then a .com domain name (or indeed, the name itself) is less important. Simply because people are clicking on it instead of typing it in - i.e. no mistakes.

One scenario I can think of where a .com wouldn't be the best choice for a domain name is possibly where you're targetting a very local (i.e. country) market. In this case, a country TLD (.co.uk/.de/etc) can help distinguish your brand as local to that country, which tends to attract people.

Anyway, thats my take on it.

Especially nowadays, the perfect .com is almost impossible to register, so i won't be surprised to see .net and .org becoming more frequently used.

Thats certainly true, the future is diversification of domain names and public perception along with it, however at this particular moment in time its all about the Benjacoms.

When starting an international (read english) project, I always try to secure the .com, even if it means changing or making up names.
.com is very powerful, just look at Topix.net -> Topix.com (purchased for 1 million dollars, just to secure the .com).

Don't overfocus at the TLD and loose the quest for a good name before the dot

.com for branding... but if the site is for adsense and such, any domain extension with good keywords since SEO is the same for all extensions.

ofcourse .com will be my choice because most people in the world are very familiar with .com but not with .net .org .us etc...
    Also
.coms are good for SEO and branding ;)

If u want ppl to remember it, dotcom will always come to mind first. If it's for investment (to resell later), dotcom wins again.

Com is on the top list of course but not at any price. Personaly I don't like .net (aldo I own a few) because it is not saying anything (it is good if you are operating a network of sites with similar or close topics through..) but I feel people are ignoring it a bit. I have bunch of names with .net and the same with .org - they are parked and guess what? .org is receiving better traffic....

Other extensions are also good for example xx.com is fine - my eu.com site didn't suffer from having a name like that - in fact it is excellent for geo targeting...

Well, there will be a lot more extensions coming in the future and there will be more valuable names...but I guess nothing will beat good old .com

I'm saying that sometimes you have to spend the dosh and buy a .com at a premium price. Otherwise you'll waste much more than that in your marketing dollars (with word-of-mouth/traditional media marketing, not backlinks and search engines).

    That's not quite true
It depends on the traget group of your site
.com in some countries is not so popular as the regional ccTLD
Even google registers the name to regional ccTLDs and if you look some alexa traffic stats the regional ccTLD overcomes the .com
SO there is no a generic rule for this but if you target people all around the world there is no question. com is your solution

To survive and make profit via NAME Advertising Expensive items MUST BE DOT com, nothing beats the dot .com - absolutely nothing!

if you are not dotcom then put your business into eBays, and Craigslists
