Do you follow your religion out of fear of punishment, or truly because you believe?

And, folks, before you answer this question think very hard about your answer. It is my experience that most people claim to believe the dogmatic rules stipulated by men because it's been beaten into them or repeated so often that they don't bother to use a few brain cells and really THINK about what they've been taught since the cradle. Most of it is bunk. Man made rules stipulated by the ruling class to keep all the rest of the masses under their thumbs. Fear is what keeps most people under control. Fear of burning in some hell, fear of having their family turn it's back on them for daring to follow another path, fear of death if they don't follow the dogma, etc. Fear. Fear is the negative side of belief. Fear is what keeps most people under control. So, think really hard about your answer before you post. You might find a bit of enlightenment about yourself.;)

    1) I believe in my religion truly because I believe.

    2) I follow most commandments of religion because they are natural, ethical and required to establish a healthy and happy society.

    3) I follow some commandments of religion because of fear of punishment.

I follow my religion completely based on what I have learned from the Bible, from what the Bible says about history, from what the Bible says about what people are like today, from what the Bible teaches of what we are supposed to be doing. Years of study and association with fellow believers has consolidated my thoughts that I am with God's chosen people. However, this is not to say that no one else is allowed to become God's chosen ones. Of course, we welcome all people from all backgrounds and nations to worship the true God.

There is no fear of punishment if in your heart you are doing the right thing. And I know I am doing the right thing.

    Regards,

    Col :)

I don't follow that priest mumbo jumbo saying I should be fearful of god or that I should be modest ( don't spend money on what they say are "bad" new things ;) ) while they are talking behind gold statue and what else not ...

but I do follow tradition of my parents, grandparents and respect our religion holidays and traditions. Those seem kind of good and honest and it keeps family connected even more.

Sorry you're stuck on that desert island with only one book out of a whole world of great stories and insightful knowledge, Cheap Seo Services. But, you sure are pretty adamant about being sure you know everything you need to know and you're not believing out of fear. As long as you're happy. ;)

Thanks. I am very happy. Also, there's never a point where I can say "I know everything I need to know". It's a case of continual learning.

Yup. I have nothing against anyone that believes in anything, it's the persons personal choice and is how it should be.

I believed that England were going to win the World cup in 1990 but we lost to Germany on penalties in the semi final. :(

People are entitled to believe whatever they want to, I believe that since we sold Tierry Henry for a paltry 16 million pounds without finding a suitable replacement the best position we (Arsenal) can hope for is 3rd place this upcoming Premier League Football Season.

LOL.....That's quite a funny comparison. You are perfectly correct. Good to see you don't go around calling people "idiots" like some others do, without any cause to do so.

    Very true Col.

People are completely entitled to their own beliefs and that should always be the way.

I might have said this before in a post here somewhere but when I was a child (around 10 years old) I was forced into going to something in England that we call "Sunday School" (Church of England Christian bullshit) with my 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

It was a complete load of fucking bollocks where we went with our parents to the first hour or so (in the main church singing hymns and shit) then we went to Sunday school afterwards for around one and a half hours while the parents went home (ostensibly because they couldn't go to Sunday School because they were not children but realistically because they wanted a fuck whilst they knew for 100% deffo that all of us were tied up for the next hour and a half praising Jesus lol!) :D

I was forced into singing praises to someone that I didn't believe in at all, and that is not right at all.

Still I do not disrespect anyone that does believe in anything. Everyone is entitled to believe in what they want to believe.

For example, when I was in the Army in Germany for 3 years I had a firm belief that I would nail these two smoking German girls at the same time for a superb threesome, as it transpires it never happened but it never stopped me believing for the entire 3 years that I was there. :D

actually the question is little bit tricky but I agree with idiot_inside.
    why?
I belive in my religion and that why i fear of pusnishment (this talk about unishment from god?)
i i commit any sin, i will be judge
so i try to avoid sins because i fear of punishment in the life after.
that why in every religion there is heaven and hell.

wow, so if murder and rape weren't punishable by eternal hell you might be inclined to commit murder and rape? That's frightning.

I also find it strange that even though atheists make up around 13% of the general population in america they make up less than 1% of the prison population. It seems that religion doesn't prevent people doing bad things, And the statistics suggest that it may even encourage it if prisons are 99% full of people supposedly believing in "god".

I completely understand dude! For what it's worth most of the churches here in the USA have that 'Sunday school" shit too. I got stuck being forced to go to it and the church services every fucking week until I hit around 15 or 16 years old then I just flatly refused to ever step foot in another church again. That whole "crispianity" shit fucked my head up for a while, but I grew up and got a life and got over it. Happily married, and happily unencumbered by religious dogmatic bullshit. ;)

    this is an if question.
actually we should follow two laws, our religion law and also our goverment law.
and both law should works together, but if not.
we should follow our goverment law.
example: if (I said again IF) there is no punishment for certain religion for murder and rape, BUT in goverment law there is punishment, so we should follow the goverment law.

btw, in my religion, rape and murder are punishable by death.
