its a bad habit.i can't sleep in noisy environment .but i think mostly people who feel loneliness or depressed do that
I actually would like to do this but too much of a control freak to manage it! It has to be switched off before I sleep.
As a kid, I was never able to fall asleep in front of a TV. It was just to exciting for me to watch it. Now, in my 40's, I turn the TV on so that I could fall asleep.
I try to save on my electric bill so I'm the person that turns the tv off when others fall asleep with it on. But when I fall asleep with the tv on, I wake up 4 hrs later and it's still on. So I just turn it off when I catch myself nodding at the tv every few seconds.
Usually fall asleep while "watching" doomsday preppers, turn down the volume a bit and then i'm off to dream land.
