Do you make changes to their pages yourself, or give them directions/guidance on what to do, or both?

Depends, I do actual SEO service AND strictly consultation. If I'm doing the service I edit the actual code myself, if it's just consultation I only consultant on what to do.

Thanks. And I assume that's all just part of your hourly fee?

Depends, I charge hourly for one-time service and a flat monthly fee for monthly and consultation. My rates vary on competitiveness, time allocated needed, etc.

I do consultation only, for a few reasons:

    1. I don't have enough time to make the changes myself.
    2. I don't want to be responsible for anything that *may* happen while I edit code.
    3. Clients are not always willing to pay my hourly price for me to sit there and edit code, and they usually already have developers.

Yes i generally do the code unless they have in-house devs, sometimes it's quite extensive such as throwing the whole shopping cart/check-out system in the bin and replacing it with a better system.

I know this is more a developer or web designers role, but when something is preventing conversions or rankings and this is what i'm paid to increase then i see it as my job to implement the changes.

It depends on the client if they will let me to touch their site or they're the one who implement my suggestion so that their site would be search engine friendly.

Ssandecki, is right, first of all we need to give advise,,, if he agrees with it,,, you may change that...
If he does not agree with yr suggestions, that you do not commit any thing...
Well in SEO you never can commit for good results...
