Link Exchange is used to be known as effective and quite classic SEO strategy. There are many successful websites with good ranking and high targeted traffic gained exclusively thanks to link exchange.

What are your thoughts on this point?

I agree with u... But putting links on relevant sites will be more useful than putting links on any site.

have to be carefull with that though. make sure you link to relevant pages and even if you think the page is relevant make sure google likes it too.

This is why I became a bit hesitant to exchange links lately.
last week I checked all my links and deleted those that google did not index (site) two day's later google decided to fully index my site again....

if one of the sites you link to decides to go frenzy and decides he needs links from everything and more then your site will also be punished because you link to them.

    be carefull and check frequently

Yes, the link exchange, it is the basic strategy to rise traffic with targetted traffic on own site, but it require a lot of works, and the results came only after months.

It is an hard job :), but it is necessary if you have low budgets.

I do the link exchange (and all the SEO stuffs) for the company I work for, it's very time consuming but I think it's worth it.

    Yes, by myself.
But I use a tool - otherwise I'd die doing it manually. :D

A client just came with a site to me last week which got dropped from Google. And I am pretty sure it was because of the free link exchange program he was running on there. According to Matt Cutts of Google, Bigdaddy created a criteria were sites where 'Google algorithms had very low trust in the inlinks or the outlinks' were dropped from the index.
