Did your directory get checked for dead links lately? Do you send those links to your pending queue or just delete it? Share your experience...
very nice. This question rose up because one of my earlier websites is no longer online and it still shows up in some directories.
It was actually something i was thinking about... so does this relate only where free submissions have occured or where paid submissions are now dead? When paid links are dead do you attempt to make contact with the owner informing them that their link is going to be removed - afterall they shouldnt be entitled to a refund... should they?
We use a 3rd party tool to check dead links at least 2 times a month Necessary for d/b maintenance and upkeep
Interesting, do you mind telling which 3rd party tool are you using? These online tools take ages.. http://validator.w3.org/checklink or http://www.dead-links.com/
For those directory owners that dont i suggest that you do... Britishguy just mentioned much as well as the spiders time isnt wasted running into dead links which could have negative repercussions on your site later down the road... For phpld In admin panel go to... Directory >> Validate and you can opt to change how many per cycle and timeout time... Important: check ALL links as sometimes the links DO WORK... So as not to delete a live link... thx malcolm
yes, precisely. my question was to find out why some wld prefer to use 3rd party tools when phpld already has this feature??
I often VALIDATE links in my directories and find some dead links --I then check them and see if those sites are there. If yes -- I correctly put them again and if not --well --you can't do anything but to remove.
I got one or two links that were dead... i never deleted them but inactive them and send the emails to the owners of the links but never get a reply back...but its not my headache and so i'll keep them inactive unless they are really active and yeah i dont delete them atleast!
my idea is to keep them inactive, as it doesn't really take up much space and u definitely don't want an angry customer knocking on your door demanding why their links are down just cause their website was down several days for maintenance or something. I will prob keep inactive links for abt a yr or so, then mass delete them later....
YOU mean DELETE Them dont ya... heheheh I know nobody wants to say it in fear that they look bad but hey,,, the freakin link is dead and the info about it will probably change... and Please dont tell me about the ones who cant pay thier hosting bill.. thx malcolm
I'd hope that most would keep them at least for a little while. Accidents happen, sites get hacked, random maintenance, etc, etc...all can take a site down for a few minutes to a few days. I know it would suck if I lost links due to me updating my forum software, my blog templates, or something similar. it would be like saying "I'm making my site better, please remove my links".
i check mine weekly if i find a dead link i send the owner an email if i get no reply and link is still dead after 48hrs then i remove them
I would like to know that tool, pete. If you don't mind sharing it with us In my case, for some reason, the link check function isn't working properly. It only checks up on some, not all. So I am having a hard time to check all of them right now. Luckily, it was working about 2 months ago, and I could check all of the submitted links. But I would have to go through again soon.
On my PR3 Blog Directory I check the links twice a month. In case of any dead link I make them inactive and then after 7 days, its either get deleted or back online depending on the situation. On Best Web Directory so far, no dead link. But I will go with the same procedure. Just that I will also let the owner know about it. (Inactive & deletion)
Dead or missing link gets made "suspended" and I'll go back sometime and look to see if it's returned. (Things happen and I will give benefit of the doubt.) Link broken due to site changes - might update, it just depends on my mood - otherwise "suspended". Site that completely changed it's focus - deleted. (One old arts and craft-related domain was redone to be a porno site - not sure of the marketing strategy on that one.)
