Do you collect upfront or after?

    Bravo, Jim, for bringing this up! Too bad more
    writers don't have these policies, it would save
    a lot of heartache and headaches down the road.

    Personally, I get 50% of a project quote to
    reserve my time; and then, depending on the
    project and the client, the balance before I
    actually begin working, or upon completion of
    the first draft.

    Anyone who doesn't like it, is always more than
    welcome to go work with another writer - in fact,
    I even give them a few names to call if they don't
    like my terms.

    Most people don't have a problem with it, which is
    good. I used to take 50% up front and the balance
    after delivery, but getting screwed over a couple of
    times ended that right off! :)

    Hi there -

    For larger jobs, I like to take it in thirds -- one third up front, one third half way through, and one third on completion. This helps with cash flow, and on the rare occasion where the client skips out on the final payment you are left with more than in the 50/50 equation.
