    I played around with this in a couple of forums. Nothing scientific just a view I reached.

    (a) A link in the body of the message with just the plain html was more likely to be clicked than anything else. I guess it is curiosity.
    (b) The signature links are less often clicked but also useful for SEO as long as they have a descriptive.

    Didnt try putting a descriptive link in the body. Gut feeling is that its the "wonder where that link goes" that drives the higher click through.

    Not sure about the quality of the traffic between the two. The descriptive in the signature link should give better quality traffic ?

    Has anyone seen measurements around this stuff ?
