Hello, Just wondering...For those inside the USA who are wanting to sell their digital "Ebooks" online to foreign countries...I wondered if the "seller" needs to collect sales tax on these sales to pay foreign governments? I looked for a while in Google, but didn't find what I was looking for. Thanks!! PS. Sorry for typos in the headline...I'm a peon
The answer is no and yes, the only time you might need to collect sales tax is if the person who is downloading the content is in the same state as you. In the USA there isnt a federal sales tax only state and local. Some countries might require you to do this, but I wouldnt put two cents into them even sending you an email if you did not. Who in the hell cares if you get a letter from a country, say peru, they have no legal authority what so ever if you're doing business here in the USA.
Two reasons why the answer is no: First, someone residing in a foreign country is probably not subject to the sales tax of your US jurisdiction. Second, digital downloads are generally not subject to sales tax anyway. Only physical products. (Note I say generally as I have not researched what, if any, jurisdictions might try to tax a digital download.)
