Do you actually use you real information ?

Do you actually use you real information when you sign up for different accounts ? I mean do you give them your name, real address, real phone number, real everything if they ask you ? I know I don't have to give them to every forum I sign up but what about sites where you buy something and they need to charge you ? I just signed up at godaddy for a account and gave them my real info(do they really need it), which will appear in the whois of that domain which, call me paranoid, I just don't feel comfortable with. So how do you do it ?

Usually unless it's a dupe account i'm making.

Although I do have an email address specificly for signing up to things, just so I keep the spam down on my main email account.

You should be able to make the whois private. For a fee though.

When i sign up for accounts with companies that i am purchasing from, I always use real information. However, for the average run of the mill stuff, i rarely give anything except my real name out.

I never use my real info except on payment processor sites. It's quite risky.

It depends on how trustworthy I feel the site is. If you are worried about people seeing your whois information just simply buy the id protector for like $1-$2 and noone will see it :)

    Yes, When it matters.
    For example, hosting ,domains etc.
If site isn't that well known or something I don't care to much about, then false info.

I give that sort of information when I need to be contacted, example like hosting or accepting payments, that sort of thing, in nearly all other cases, I leave a lot of personal information out. Remember, if someone hacks a site that has your personal information, its probably not good for you....

I'll give full information for when I'm purchasing things or signing up for something where it's pretty obvious it's a requirement. But for forums and such I just leave that information blank or put n/a.

Charlie Chambers, This is different from being 'honest'.

You don't want to be bugged or given a non-trustworthy site your information.

Maintaining privacy online is very important. You need to use discretion when giving out your personal info.

I use my real info for anything that requires payment or is important to my online business activities. I have several "throw-a-way" gmail addresses for things like directory submissions and free giveaways -- anything that might generate a lot of spam. You want to use your real info for anything that you will need to stay updated on -- domain renewals, subscription renewals, newsletters from people you trust, etc.

One thing I do to protect my privacy is to use a UPS store address for my mailing address. I never give out my home address. I also have an extra cell phone number that I use when I list things on Craigslist or fill out forms online so I keep my real number private. It only costs $10/mo to add an extra phone to my cell phone plan.

    Hope this helps.

It depends. If it's something official then of course. If it's not something official then not all of the time.
