Do we need to update ALL pages ALL the time?

Let say I have a website that having 1000 products in 1000 pages.
Some of these pages has good ranking for certain long tail keywords which leads the customer directly to the product page.

And I add in new products everyday.
But no update on previous product page.

I google webtool, the "Top search queries" under statistic, I can see which keywords that my website appear and it's position.
I just recheck all of them and notice ALL the current position is MUCH MORE lower than what i read from the statistic.
Which means all these keywords I used to have good ranking is now having BAD ranking.

Is it due to no update on the product pages?
Isn't it normal that we create new pages rather than update old pages, same goes to blog.
And the consequences is getting the ranking drop for not updating the old pages?

Please correct me if I'm wrong :) I'm new to SEO, still learning.

Updating all the pages of a very big portal is very difficult. Yes you can add some content once or twice in a month not on all the pages. And it will be beneficial if you regularly update your website by adding new pages.

No you don't have to unless their's an update needed for your certain product, example: change of price, description etc.

But when I'm seeing the pages i was ranked well now being no where it's kind of sad :(
Anyway, the main question is does it really being lowered the rank due to content not updated? Is it the rootcause?

Do not update web pages for "search engines", you should only be adding content or new products for your actual visitors. If it benefits your "visitors" to add new products to the homepage than do so. Remember, all the organic traffic in the world is useless if it doesn't convert or turn into a sale.
