Do Video Games Promote Criminal Behaviour?

This is obviously an ongoing debate and am looking for any views on the topic. Any views on this are welcome as I am doing this as a project while in college. You may want to refer to when a teenage boy killed his friend and blamed it on Manhunt.

Yeah maybe it does. I read how games like grand theft auto were blamed for criminal actions. People do what they see in the games. But video games are not to blame and the people who do the crime are the real ones who should be blamed.

Yeah, a lot of games promote bad behavior. Not necessarily criminal though.

You can't blame games for bad behavior, if you get a bad behavior of games there is something wrong overall.

    Of course they do...

For example after playing grand theft auto the other day I shot my landlord, stole a car, then picked up a hooker.

They might promote ideas but not necessarily immediate behavioral changes. Only someone who is young enough or lacks proper thinking skills will think to apply what they did in a video game to real life. The same holds true with tv and movies. This is why when you hear about people being influenced by video games in crimes most of the time they have a mental illness.

    They also demote criminal behaviour

Eg, If someone has a strong desire to go on a killing spree, they play grand theft auto, desire gone.

But you never hear about those kind of stories because they're insignificant.

No. If one kills another and blames it on video games then clearly he/she has a mental problem.

From my personal experience, it does. You shouldn't be away from Video games, rather have an eye on what is the ultimate lesson that the game teaches...!

Not really. I guess it depends on the individual and the game. Something like Delta Force, Diablo etc. needs to be played with caution because it's very easy to blur the line between reality and a game.

Yes, video game might promote criminal behavior (remember the fuss with GTA series), but on bottom line it's all about user.
If user has some common sense he should make a difference between video games and real life.

    yeah u r right
i read a article about the sudden change in kids behaviors by playing action games ,like unreal tournament, GTA series etc. Report says kids show the moves which they see in games and try to act like the characters in video games.
