I use URL shorteners to save character space. If I can, I always use full path to URL or site. It's more credible that way -- viewers in Twitter will know what site they will be going to if they follow the link. You could also create a custom URL shortener for your domain. Here is a good starting point: iwantmyname.com/blog/2009/08/10-tools-to-run-an-url-shortener-on-your-own-custom-domain.htm If your domain name even smells the least bit spammy, then there's prob. not much that will help it. Additionally, the more creative your tweets, the more likely you are to get click-thru traffic; so make sure those 140 character blurbs are especially compelling.
Short urls are better in blackhat spamming If your content is genuine, dont think of saving character space
www.Fantasy.com/Book-Article is better for gaining Search Engine Traffic than www.Fantasy.com/post/1222323 So in that sense yes.
URL shortener tool doesn't help increase traffic. They only help save space for characters to add more eye-catchy text on your tweets. The traffic is still based on how descriptive and attracting your text when making tweets.
Of course they help you save space when writing your tweets. Another essential factor why it is advisable to create short urls is that you will know from the traffic stats of the url shortener service how many clicks you get to your links. For example bit.ly provides you with some good statistics here. So you will know which of your tweets are performing well and what you can do to get a higher response rate.
Short URLS have less chance of being counted as spam because there will be less repetition of keywords so in an indirect way that can help SEO.
Most of the people scare to click on the url (e.g. tiny url) as they don't know where it will lead to them. In this case it may decrease the traffic. Not quite sure if it can help the way it is suppose to be.
It's possible to increase your traffic if you add interesting word, but I think that's not good for seo
