Do tons of outbound links on messageboard posts cause substantial page rank bleeding?

The only case you will benefit from removing outbound links is if you linked to bad neighbourhood sites (sites that use unethical techniques or link to such sites). Generally, in your industry most of sites are like that and there is no doubt you may be harmed if you don't look before you link.

Generally, I'd advise you getting more incoming links. I have founded a site with 50 pages of unique content, a couple of links and it got PR4. I'm guessing you need unique content as well as links.

LOL, it's amazing how many differing opinions I'm getting on all the various topics here!

Regarding the page ranking, I've been sitting on one for a while, and I'm sure there are things I'm doing wrong. I only have about 100 members to message board, and like I said, there is not a lot of unique content on there. 95% of the content is copies of people's blogs they've posted elsewhere, recipes, or articles that appear elsewhere.

I know my homepage needs to be setup better, and the main key words I want isn't even placed with any of the search engines, and I cannot figure out why. It's listed as one of my keywords on the homepage, and the word is even part of my url.

The biggest thing I need is to get more members, but the catch is not many people know about the site, which is why I've been trying to do link exchanges with related popular (high PR) blogs. I've only brought in 12 new message board members in each of the last 2 months. :(

It's true... PageRank is based on backlinks, not original content. However, duplicate content penalties can affect one's position in the SERPs.

    Cryo.
