Do those "top referrers" blocks on pages help?

You know when sites have those sections that say "Today's Top Referrers"... Do those actually encourage people to link to you at all?

Or do they just encourage spammers? I'm looking for a way to get some more linkage. Seems like Google doesn't like to index people with not enough links these days...

    Thanks

Referral spamming is so easy that I doubt there will be anyone who actually links to you in order to get their URL to show up on your page and even if they do, it will be unlikely that they will drive enough traffic to your site to replace the URL of a spammer who can spoof thousands of referrals every day.

If one were desperate for backlinks and willing to don the black hat, it would be no problem to do a search for sites with a "Today's Top Referrers" section, cook up a quick script, and start spamming away.

I tried that, and not very useful...
You probably are better maintaining a reciprocal directory or something similar. :)

are reciprocal links as useful at non-recip links? I mean, i could set up something like that, exchange links with sites in related fields... prolly get a bunch of PR0 sites.. heh. How would you do that? Just manually offer a link exchange? Or what?
