Do subpages need backlinks to rank high?

My homepage comes up top 10 for many competitive keywords in my niche

However, my subpages .... which I think are the best in the niche and have the proper Title Tags & great content dont rank too high for even less competitive keywords


Could it be because I have no Meta Tags / Meta Descrition?

Yes, you need backlinks and META tags for these pages! Don't leave out this crucial bit.

 

You need to build some back links up for your inner pages. Also, do you have good inner linking between your home page with your sub pages, using your keywords?

For example: from your homepage <a href="yoursite.com/your_sub_page.html" title="a small sentence about your keyword!" >yourkeyword</a>

 

Why do a lot places that you can place links not allow you to place links to your inner pages though and only to your home page?

 

Build backlinks for inner pages and build interlinking page structures for your site so that each page links to one another using proper keyword rich anchor text. This will help you dramatically rank your inner pages.

 

I think one of the best way to promote your site is to promote your landing using your keywords that link to your subpages.IMO

I have the same problem. My home page ranks 1, but internal pages are lost into serps...

1) Link to them internally from other strong web pages on same site, such as the homepage;
2) Try to obtain external links directly to those pages too.

Just have a look to wikipedia - all inner pages have a lot of backlinks

 

submit to directory sites that allow deeplinking..may help some.i have a list of a couple if your interested

 

Quite the interesting thread, yeah. I know a lot of bloggers that do not do this, but I recommend it as well. I think building deep links may actually help your main page as well! Best of luck.
