Do Social bookmarking buttons help ?

Many sites have social bookmarking buttons somewhere on the page.

Do these help in promoting the site ?
I have not used these buttons any time.
Are they handy ? any of you use them often ?

Please share what you think on this.

Buttons will help you improved your site popularity on many bookmarking site if many readers bookmark your site. It will also increase your traffic.

 

The most handy seems to be AddThis - free, simple and easy to implement!

Yes and no, it all depends on the content being displayed on your pages. Informational content should contain the bookmark buttons, sales and services pages should not.

 

Most people who bookmark your site are professionals and have their own social bookmarking plugins integrated into their browser and will use those.

However if you ask your readers to use them at the end of some of your best blog posts you may generate some good traffic via them bookmarking your site.

IMO a blog with good looking social bookmarking buttons on it's blog posts looks more professional than one without!

My two cents to this thread:

• Content is king
  Although adding a social-bookmarking button to your website helps, you should realise that content is still king as mentioned previously and no social-bookmarking button will help if the content on your website is not interesting.
• SEO for buttons
  Optimising the title, description and tags (keywords) of the script of social-bookmarking buttons is perhaps equally important as optimising the header tags of your webpages. This is actually a factor that is often overlooked. Many website owners think that putting a social-bookmarking button on your page is sufficient to attract more visitors, but with optimised content you can attract extra visitors. Another important factor is the selection of the social-bookmarking websites in the button script. Each social-bookmarking website has its own audience and you should adjust the websites to submit to to the audience of your website. For instance: say you run an adult website, then you won't attract many visitors by putting the Technorati button in your script. Instead, use the Pornorati button.
• Buttons versus plugins
  Many people participate in more than one social-bookmarking website and many popular social-bookmarking websites have their own browser plugin, hence people are likely to have more than one browser plugin. This can get rather annoying and too many browser plugins may clutter your browser. Thus, social-bookmarking buttons are preferred over social-bookmarking plugins.

not too sure...but if your site is interesting then sure it will because a lot of people will bookmark it.

 

I thought those social bookmarking buttons can get you blacklisted from those sites? True or Myth?
