Do search engines index ALT text descriptions for JPEG and other image files?

    I know they do for the "Image" search engine part. I also know they look around the image for keywords as well.

    Yes thats how they index the images part the image name and the alt text

    They surely do, and using keyword-rich Alt description makes a big difference in image search.

    You do it in your robots.txt by either allowing or disallowing it.
