not so fast m8. according to google analytics:

    website: Digital Photography
    visitor segment: digital enthusiasts

3% of my total traffic still uses 800*600 - most of the college university computers are configured to that resolution.

so it makes sense to optimize for those poor guyz too :)

    oh and I even got one 640x480 - 0.00002% :D

I have a small blog about photoshop tutorials. I got maxim 700 Uniques/day from which 2.8% had 800x600 resolution... Anyway, in 1 year at most the percentage will drop under 1% in my opinion. LCD are cheaper and cheaper everyday! :D

I remember seeing a graph of the amount of people that use it now adays.
Not a lot of people, but people still do, that's the problem. I know a couple people who still do as well, which is quite lame.

If I were you, I don't think you should, I'm sure the small amount of people that still use it nowadays are able to use their scroll bar, and get used to it.

Also, if you want anyone with a mobile to visit your poker site, keep smaller resolutions in mind. Those phones are damn small. But the kids these days, they've got good eyes...

Basically, just cover your butt as far as letting your text grow or shrink as needed (use something other than px for sizes), let your page be flexible and maybe avoid a fixed width (depends on the design of your site though).

I've made one site which is fixed width for 1024 px and if you've got 600*800 you're scrolling a lot. Were I to do it again, I'd make it more flexible. A second fixed-width site I've made has all the important stuff in the middle and the middle fits in smaller screens. People may have to scroll to see the whole page, but they don't have to scroll to use the basic functions.

Remember also that while your visitor may have a 1024*760 screen or something, they're not necessarily looking at your site with all that. Many people shrink their viewport so they can have other crap open on their desktop. I like to see sites with my full hi-rez screen, but from what I hear here at DP, I'm in the minority. So making your site reasonably useful at 600*800 IS still a good idea.

It depends a lot on the type of visitors your site tends to attract. I have one site that is getting a lot of low-tech visitors and it has around 20% at 800 x 600.

Another point to remember is that many people on a higher resolution don't open browsers to full screen, so screen resolution is not the best way often to decide the layout / design. There are stat programs out there that show browser size if you're ever curious, I was very surprised at how small a lot of people keep their window.

You also have to look at the increase use of PDAs and Smart Phones which also have relatively low resolution screens.

Remember of cause, as said by others, just because someones screen resolution is high doesnt mean they have a window maximised and therefore could be lower
