Do People Buy at 6 in the morning?

Discussion in 'Google AdWords' started by jmansel, Apr 1, 2008.

To optimize my budget, I decided to time limit my ads from 6am to 1am the next day.

With some more targeted keywords, and rise in cpc, my daily budget is again reaching its max.

So I changed the start time to 10am, because I do not think people at that time are serious buyers, and are more likely to just be 'window shopping'.

I suppose I could figure out what time my conversions are, but I have not set up my goals in Google analytics yet.

Has anyone already done any research on this already?

    Thx

Depends on what your niche is (entertainment subjects do better at weekends and in the evenings, business subjects in working hours - a generalisation, but broadly true).
Early hours of the morning - drunks.
Early mornings - the French, Italians and Spanish surf and buy before work - in my experience. Not so much other nationalities.

But it all depends on your niche - and only YOU know YOUR customers.

I find my conversion rate is fairly consistent throughout the day for most of my campaigns.

There is no universal "buy time". When people buy is contingent on hundreds of different factors.

ok, I sell sat navs to uk customers. So I am fairly confident that I have the timings right.

Point noted about the drunks at night time. But they could be the best impulse buyers as well :)

Here's the best way to figure out your customers buying patterns - test it. Run a campaign 24 hours a day 7 days a week for a month or so, however long you need to reach statistical significance. You have to have tracking in place to determine at what times sales are taking place. Now that you have that info day part or increase bids during those peak times.

It's a a good idea to retest this with some frequency, or, leave a small campaign running in off peak offers to monitor potential changes in buying habits. I've seen people lock themselves into a day parting pattern based on faulty data - ie of course people only buy between 1 and 5 because that's the only time you have ads running.

Well I'm from the UK and I often browse the internet around 6am. I mean, that doesn't mean im going to buy anything, but its a possibility. A lot of "Businessmen" probably get up around that time so I guess so.

the only way to know is to test, run it 24hrs a day for a few days, then restrict it to 10am-1am and see what the difference is in sales, clicks, and conversions.

That's not really the right way to test.

It all depends on your product and potential market.

    Conversion tracking will answer all

As you are a member of Wealthy Affiliate (you are currently promoting your affiliate link) did you ask this question on the WA forum or directly to the "two Successful internet marketers who are willing to share their secrets"?

Its seems that I need to do the research and track conversions. Does anyone know how to set up Goals in Google Analytics with a BANS site, such as PhpBay? I searched the internet, but could not find anything useful.

I find that in the home business niche, the best time is 4pm to 12pm and 4am to 8am EDT. I have not statisticlly tracked the clicks. This is when the orders usually come in. I run the ads 24/7 because around 10% of the orders are not in the prime time areas.

buying time is a tough thing to measure. Why not just run the ad 24/7?

I've it really depends on how long it takes to make a purchase and or fill out a form. If it's a lengthy process, then they may find your site at work, but not actually go through the process until they get home for work. The problem is you paid for the click then but didn't get the conversion. They go back to google and search for the site again but not click your link, so someone else will get the credit for the lead or sale.

So, short stuff can run all day long, longer processes, do them at night or early morning only on weekdays.

Funny, I seem to get a lot of sales around 4am. I was just talking to my wife about this.

I'm assuming you ran a the hourly campaign report to know what hours you're converting? If not, definitely do so.

As everyone has mentioned, it all depends on the natural of your site but this report should provide further insight. Also, it's always good to see what your competitors are doing. Spyfu is good for that.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

I am geting some sells at 3am.

You can try to set up two different ad groups (with 2 timeset).
And then you cancheck conversion by hours
and lower price with the traffic convert less.

depends on who your selling to and what their sleeping pattern is

I sell products to people who work night shifts and do occassionally sell products a this time period although its better during the normal working day

    regards

There is no hourly campaign report that shows conversions...

At least not to the public ;b
