I've decided to upgrade the site first, add more functionality to it, and I will try the donations thing later :)

Thanks all for the replies :)

They work wonders on open-source type software, especially if it's popular. I know software like PHPBB receives a lot of donations every month.

Donation buttons never work but 1000UV should do good things with adsense. Maybe you need to get your CTR up a bit or something.

I think donation will work depend on what is your service or web content.
If your content intend to help your visitor, this will work if not, it is useless.

Only if you offer something amazing or claim to donate that money to starving, naked, impoverished children in Tibet or something.

I know a few DVD-rippers who make around $200 a month via donation but they provide high quality, illegal, DVD rips for free.

I wouldn't dabble in that because I enjoy my freedom.

I donated $2 to a site once. Once. My wife and I teach a class for kids at church and this site is full of great ideas and no ads, so I pitched in a few cents to help with costs.

You might get some money out of it, but not a lot. And I don't know abut you but it doesn't feel like hard earned money
when you get it for free.

I run a large forum, where users come together and get information and support free of charge. We are in a satellite niche. We allow members to donate and in return they get a coloured username, a custom title and access to a private ViP discussion section and we actually generate several thousand each month from this.

I'm not sure whether this answers your question, as technically our users do get something for donating, but what they get certainly doesn't cost what they donate (usually between $10-$30) so it should still be considered as a simple donation IMO.

Donations work on what type of work have you provided.u open a site that provides nothing but useless content and put donation link on it.It will not work.
For donation to get you work , first of all you should have website that complies -
    1- porn
    2-warez
    3-opensource softwares/scripts
    4-legit non profit organizations
    as suggested buddynest...then
immerse lots of content into it ( there will b no probs in porn :))

Get traffic and donations is in your hand.
If your site have populartiy then you will get lot of donations,Quit depends on your site popularity

if you're offering unique content and great value to your visitors, PLUS a profit objective (donation progress bar) as well as saying what the money is for (maintainance), you might get a decent response :).
