Do payment gateways require you to be a registered business?

    I have read that VISA, AMEX, MC and others require you to be a registered business in order to be used with a payment gateway.

    Is this really the case? And if so is a D/B/A acceptable? Also, just want is a 'registered business'?

    The gateway - no. The merchant account provider - some might. But if you are a sole proprietor, you can use your SSN and then have a DBA.
