    Of course it does

Why would you think it's any different to any other site that starts up?

If you have a huge offline marketing budget and advertise on tv, billboards, magazines etc you could probably drive traffic in that way but few of use have that kind of budget to play with.

    Hey there,

Absolutely, link building will help you with your incoming visitors from 'organic' searches. Meaning someone is searching on Google and clicks on your site in the search results. As a non-profit, though, you have the advantage of appealing to people for whatever your cause may be. In this case I would recommend a lot of what is considered to be white-hat strategy. Guest posts in particular combined with a strong effort in Social (Facebook).

    Hope this helps.

I agree with the other 2 comments here. You will need to implement SEO techniques no matter what type of site you're building. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is all about creating a site that people can find when they do a search on a search engine. Link building is also all about helping people find your site. Link building is not just about gaining links to help your page rank, but it's about putting links on sites where your potential clients, customers, donors, volunteers might be.

Yes indeed but I think you will spend a lot of time in Linked-in networking with your colleagues in the industry and driving not only traffic to your site but also getting referral from their sites. I'm in automotive field and get a lot of leads and referrals from Linked-in.

As others have suggested you will need to do link building but stay away from automated tools and from spammy techniques. You don't want to hurt your organization with anything even remotely unethical.
