I shared a story today on my blog MarketingHacks.com about one strategy I've used to get over initial procrastination and general lack of focus when starting in Internet Marketing.

Anyone else got other strategies they can share? I know getting started can be tough!

When you work for someone else, deadlines are generally handed to you. You get the task, and you are given a time frame that it needs to be done in. Then what happens is the task expands to take up the time alloted to it.

When I first started dipping my toes into the pool of Internet marketing, I found the biggest stumbling block was actually getting anything finished. I was full of â€œgreat ideasâ€ but actually getting something off the ground was another story. It took me a long time to get from several â€œgreat ideasâ€ to actually owning an income producing website. Iâ€™m going to try and explain where it was going wrong, and how I fixed it.

These are the two reasons why I found it hard to get started:

1. Procrastination: Some level of procrastination is normal, chronic procrastination is not. I was somewhere in between. When you are looking at Internet Marketing as a part-time activity in order to supplement your income, it can be easy to procrastinate. Itâ€™s not your primary source of income, so your not going to starve or get your home repossessed if you donâ€™t get something finished this month. This removes a potentially great source of motivation.
2. Lack of focus: Having lots of great ideas is a good thing, but the danger comes from starting lots of projects and not progressing them all enough to get them off the ground. When you have lots of projects on the go at the same time, you need to be very disciplined to stay on top of them, and not let anything fall behind or get forgotten about. Itâ€™s much easier to progress one idea, and focus on that.

What this all boils down to is:

1. Defining tasks,
2. Having deadlines for completing the tasks, and,
3. Having sufficient motivation for completing the tasks

How do you achieve this? Well, the key is to look at your tasks in terms of goals. Iâ€™m talking about a vague statement such as â€œto make a second income from online marketingâ€. You need to have a well phrased goal, that is measurable, has a specific time frame, and a motivating reason. Something like: â€œto make Â£500 in additional income by this time next monthâ€. Thatâ€™s a good goal because â€œÂ£500â€³ is measurable, and â€œthis time next monthâ€ is a fixed time period.

Once you have a well phrased goal statement, you should add in something about how you are going to achieve it, for example â€œcreating and flipping a website about tractorsâ€. This isnâ€™t the place to start talking about the many different online business models that you can use, so letâ€™s save that topic for other articles.

This next step is the killer! This is what will make the goal setting process work. This is the â€œDo or Dieâ€!

The final step is to attach some real meaning to the goal. Something to really make sure that itâ€™s a fixed goal, and an important goal that you must reach. One crazy idea is to throw a party. So, for the example goal given above, you would send a message around all your friends to invite them to a party. Tell them itâ€™s one month from now (establishes the time limit), and is to celebrate making your first Â£500 from Internet marketing.

Thank you. Very informative indeed. I have been in that situation before. Starting too many projects at the same time. Suffocating myself with a lot of ideas but never started anything.

Very nice post. I agree that I definitely get overcome with procrastination at times, and it's someting I'm really trying to fix. And I also can't focus at times, no matter how hard I try.

my problem is also the focus and the start but once you start something and you're really in to it then what you do should take over you
