We find that new domains have some issues in Google. Domains less than 6 months old generally get to page 5 (ish) and then stop for a few months - it's pretty difficult to convince clients to continue to pay out for a few months while there is no movement in their main keywords. If they would be open minded enough to add a blog and start updating their website frequently, I'm positive the age of the domain wouldn't be an issue.

I have one client at the moment, his competitor has 15 inbound links according to Yahoo, but his domain and site is several years old. My clients site is less than 6 months old, has 450 inbound links (from relvant, high PR sites!) and can't get off the 6th page of Google.

Old sites that have been around for years literally shoot up the rankings as soon as you start doing some SEO on them. We are optimizing another clients site for a very competitive financial keyword, since his site is about 6 years old, it went from no where to be found to the 3rd page in just a few weeks and still climbing - no new content added to the site.

So in conclusion, my own analysis says new domains are harder to rank, but if you can add new content very frequently on a blog, it will help you out a lot.

Yeah but its gotta be indexed all that time in google. YOu can't buy up a old domain and park it for 5 years without it being indexed ever and expect it to have special authority. Thats why when I always get a new site I get it indexed in Google ASAP so its out of the sandbox almost by the time im ready to get a lot of content up.

you have a point, but older websites have an advantage especially to google.
