Do lots of directory submissions help or hinder?

I have a bunch of sites. Some are just organic traffic, submitted to major engines and word of mouth. A few of my sites I have submitted to literally hundreds of directories. Do the directory submissions help achieve a higher PR if you submit, let's say, to all directories with a PR4 and higher? Does Google know and somehow not count when they see this? I ask because I haven't seen much of a difference with the sites I have done this with.

    Thanks!

How old the links are? Google often puts much importance to older links. So you may realize the benefit after some days.

Directories are still good, however, try some articles, press releases, blog reviews etc. if you can.

Ok, that's true. Most of the links are less than a year old at this point, maybe they'll have a little more weight after the next update. I'm working on articles for a few of my sites right now and then just need to find good places to submit them.

    Thanks!

I just read a post about the subject, many different sources to link from. The guy really emphasizes diversity:

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=224828

I still like to do directories, they are so simple to do. I use http://www.addurl.nu/

If you have a budget for paid links, you'll see amazing results for paid directories: http://www.avivadirectory.com/strongest-directories/

    Hope this helps,

I'd say the do help, in moderation. Do a bit of research on where your link will end up and test a few links out to see if they appear in submitted sites backlinks. Diversity is the key though; don't rely on directories alone.

Before submitting to directories, you also have to check the condition/status of the site. Aside from a site's PR, check its content/theme and choose the relevant sites for yours.

You should really check out that link I gave you earlier before, from DP too, very good, probably one of the best I found so far (because of the diversity of places where you can send information).

I almost forgot a link that is also very good:

    http://www.avivadirectory.com/strongest-directories/

That contains the list of the most effective directories you can find in the Market today. I have done extensive research, and believe me, I think these are the best directories that money can buy. You might not be able to afford the top ones, but maybe the ones at the bottom, which are less expensive.

    Hope this helps,

Buying paid links isn't that great anymore. Google is starting to penelize sites that do.

For one of the sites I've been working on, I've tried like hundreds of different things, but when I started adding it to good-quality directories, my Google SERP position drastically improved. So I still think that directory submission is good, especially if you go to directories where their webmasters are very picky.

I know this is still an open debate among SEO specialist, but from my own experiences, I think that directory submission (when combined with other SEO improvements) is the most effective tool a search marketing specialist has to get high SERP positions.

Again, this is open to debate, and you will always hear the both sides of the story. I don't think though nobody can say this is like A or like B, unless he comes from Google.

What I have not doubt in my mind that is not good at all are link exchanges and barns. This is also debatable, but the fact is that I've been reading over and over again that Google will not penalize for the links that come to you, but for the links you may add in your pages. This is because you don't have any control of what kind of websites links to you, but you do have the control to chose what links will appear in your website.

Go for directory submissions, mix it up with other link-building stuff, thats it. i mean directory submissions do give a good feeling inside, easy to do and so many can be done. but its better to be choosy and post with the right webmasters

of course it helps - they are links!

Anchor text is linked to you and if you are in the right category you are surrounded by good keywords.

Do 7000 now and the gain will come over this year

I would recommend getting as many directory listings as you can and then don't worry about it. Its not a magic bullet, but they will for sure help you. They are only part of a link building campaign

Another thing about directory submission is to make sure they're spread out over a long time.

I beleive Google is starting to discount the value of links from directories and article directories unless they are truly being audited by a real editor. Then Google will place more value on that particlular directory.
