Do links from social bookmarking sites count as backlinks?

That doesn't seem to make much sense, but I mean, would Google see a link on Digg as a good backlink?

Digg has PR 8 so would a submitting my sites to Digg count as a PR 8 link in Googles eyes?

Never really tried the whole social bookmarking thing before...

    Nice simple answer.

I was reading some threads on here and some people say they do and some say they don't.

I'll take what you say as true though, unless somebody else can give me more info

some links count and some don't......:D.

if the link is using nofollow attribute, it won't count.

DP forum has many lists of dofollow social bookmarking sites.

Social bookmarking does count. It depends whether your top criteria is traffic or pagerank. Social bookmarking can add to both your pagerank and you may get direct traffic too.

Digg is now consider as a no follow links. So when you submit your links there. That will not count as a backlinks but surely they provide you traffic

Digg pages are normal pages, thus if you have a followed link from there it counts. There used to be a problem with digg in the begining. There was a duplicate issue but it is solved. Here is a mattcutts video about it:

I suppose this also depends on whether the site your posting too allows the search engines to index it. Some sites are user restricted, so they would need to perform IP or user-agent checking to allow the search engines to access the content. Of course, if the links are marked as no-follow, they will not be weighted as backlinks.

balukutty - Thanks for the list of links, although it's time consuming, it's helpful to have the sites rather than spending my time looking for them. Looks like every one of them is a Pligg site, I suppose that's the norm now.

Definitely, every single backlink counts. There is some value in every backlink you can get including those social bookmarking links.

Don't ever underestimate the value of having a link on a social bookmarking site, regardless of 'dofollow' status. A page, whether popular or not on Digg, will often times rank above other sites in SERPs, therefore being 1 click away from a visitor is better than 3 pages buried in SERPS.

I have yet to see Twitter backlinks counted by Google. Am not sure if they do count them.
