Do links from .ru domains hurt my site?

Discussion in 'Traffic Analysis' started by GraphicBass, Oct 15, 2011.

I was browsing my Awstats and noticed quite a few .ru sites linking to my site, which sells downloadable employee handbooks strictly for the U.S. market. I can't imagine someone viewing a Romainian site (especially in their native language) who would benefit from my product.

I assume they are linking as my site is more than 13 years old with some authority.

My question is can this type of link hurt my site? And if so, is there a way to block these types of inbound link?

    Thanks!

Unless they are porn / violence websites, I don't think so. You mean hurting your site in local search engine results right? Nope, I don't think it'll do any damage to your website.

I would like to hear more about blocking these links though.. maybe you can write to the owners and have them removed, or at least making it no follow? You can ban their IPs in your htaccess, but I don't know whether it will block the links or not since the links are on "their sides".

    Thanks for the reply, chuka.

It seems that just one of about 20 (last month) is a porn site. The others are run-of-the-mill directory or content sites, as far as I can tell. They're not relevant at all to my niche, so I don't think they'll hurt (after researching this a little more).

I can block IPs from countries, which I may go ahead and do for a few, but I can't think of how I can prevent someone from linking. From my research, the best thing I can do is "drown out" the bad links with good backlinks, which I'm continually working on any way.

Adult Traffic is not good for regular blogs and blinks are not that damaging (coz BigG says you cant control links directed to your site) but you linking TO sites like this will hurt your Authority,, Unless you have the same category... its in googles content policy i think

No, I don't link to ANY sites outside my niche, and those sites are all authority sites in my category (U.S. employee handbooks).
