You should have limited backlinks to stay out of trouble.

Engage in link exchanges at a gradual rate. Any system or technique where tonnes of linkbacks appear overnight on sites that google doesn't attribute much trust to, is bad news.

it is also much harder to get one way links..they do have one way link services out there, but are they really and better, and can you trust them. getting one way links on your own that would be really effective, it would just be impossible to do it on your own...and you always here about how google looks down on paid link sites, and those that link with them, but I would suspect anything you hear online is a lot of rumor and spec from so called "experts" unless it comes directly from the mouth of google, you really do not know whats good or bad in linking.

I am getting a lot of spammy link requests that absolutely have nothing to do with what I am doing...some say accept all, others say dont...so what is one to do...

It is harder to get one way links for sure - but it's the way to get higher rankings on Google. Use:

    Directory Submissions
    Article Marketing
    Social Bookmarking
    Blog/Forum comments
    Buy Links

There are many variations (just look at the signature files of users on this forum - many are sold to people who want the links)

But it's the links that will get you ranked so never stop :)

I agree with the above. Less better than nothing.

To me it is useful for me but I slowly add it.

Back links do work if they are related and from "trustworthy" sites. Link exchanges are far less valuable. Work on building solid meaningful links gradually over time with decent content.

of course link backs work. not all directories are good options. pick and choose selectively, and never turn down the opportunity to abuse a directory or link exchange script that allows a-b-c recipricols. they bury your link down in some directory page, bury theirs too. or better yet, serve them a recipricol link on a throwaway page somewhere totally unrelated.

bury the recip right back! yourdomain.com/never-to-be-found/links.php

not every directory requires a recip on your main page. directories are good for an initial pr boost and getting indexed fast. not all directories work the same, and not all directories are worth submitting to. work out a list of quality directories that work with your traffic and seo plans, and put them to use.
