i noticed a site that is getting links from a site showing up in yahoo. i went to the referring site and viewed the source to see if i can find the url for the site.. the only url i found is a <img src="http://www.othersite"> so it appears that the image link is giving a backlink in yahoo. have you ever seen this ?

A link is not a link. Search engines don't see what is on image. So if you want to do SEO, better stick to the text links, and make sure you include your keywords in link text (anchor).

If the image has an alt tag with your keyword in it then it's a backlink.

Search Engine will crawl Image link as a link if you put alt tag and title tag with the image.

    Maybe you missed something.
Maybe Yahoo is not showing all the links.
Maybe the link was changed recently.

A link is a link, yes.
An image will be crawled, yes.

Will it contribute to good/better SERPs? No!

For SERPs one needs hyperlinks, (read, clickable), with anchored text.

    A "link" begins with <a.
    It has the 'a' tag.

An image "<img" is not a link, it is a reference to the source of a image file.

Well, If an image has a link coming off it, Search engines are smart enough to catch that. So Yes, a link is a link.

yes that is true. You have to put alt tag with the image. Then only google will be able to crawl the image.

Link is link, I agree on it. But text link is much better than image link. Image link will not increase the ranking if no alt tag defined.
