Do I use a web designer or a computer programmer?

I have an idea but need guidance in direction.
I want a social network website created - it is a YouTube type site with multiple video uploads; with Facebook's connectivity and interaction capabilities; and Ebays categorising, sorting/filtering abilities. It will be within a target sector with world wide appeal.
Am I best to design from the start using Dreamweaver + Adobe® Flash® Media Interactive Server 3 + Moyea Web Player Pro??
On top of all this - there is a "TICKET" that I need to include with each post - so will require "a uniquely created program" to allow users to access this.
Is this the field for a website designer or a computer programmer?
    Any suggestions are welcome please.

First up you're not going to use Dreamweaver
Second you will need various different people at different times - get your experts lined up and ready to go when they're needed: Usability, Designer, Developer, Tester

Before you even write a line of code you need to have drawn up plans of what the site will do, how it will work and how it will look. Once you know the technical challenges you'll have a better idea of the type of hosting you'll need, the type of framework to build from and the manpower to do it.

A computer programmer is not always a web developer.

It's best to choose a web developer/designer who KNOWS how to code. I've heard there are web designers who don't know how to code -- and I have no idea what it is they do LOL :D, but then again, Steve Jobbs couldnt' code lol.

if you want to use in your browser it means you need web developer and designer and if you want to use this program in your windows you need computer programmer.

you should hire a web designer who knows both how to code and design rather than computer programmer because computer programmer could only code.

    Hi.
For the social network i recomand to take an script like oxwall, elgg, dolphin(free), or phpfox, socialengine, jcow(paid).
In this base contact the team who make the script and ask how much cost your required features... which you need in your network.
Using an 3rd party developper not always will give you perfect working of the new implemented functions.
I recomand to use phpfox or socialengine who are special builded for Social Networking sites..
    Personaly i haved used phpfox v3 (paid),jcow(payd) and oxwall(free).
Do not use nulled scripts for production sites, this for begin.Just use at your risck in local host to test how its work,or better require an demo to the owner.
Elgg it is verry strong too if you know how to configure, and to modify the core.
    Dolphin work well too.
You can check which it is at your requirements.
Other scripts are garbage in my opinion.
    Best regards.

    Hi,

What you need is a medium to complex web site. Your project could be devided into multiple layers:
    1. Backend which include: the database (with users info, videos, etc) and the code which extracts data out of it and serves it to a user browser. Such code could be written in Java or PHP (..Ruby, Node.JS). This task can be accomplished by a Backend Developer/Server Developer/Java Developer/PHP Developer. All this are titles for someone able to accomplish this tasks
    2. Frontend which is basically the website (or at least what the end users see). This is implemented using: HTML, CSS and JavaScript. There are several JavaScript frameworks which can ease the job of creating such a website. (like Angular.JS, ember.js, etc..) A developer who could implement this tasks might have the job title: Web Developer (most commonly used), Fronend Developer, JavaScript Developer, Angular Developer, etc..
    3. Designer: You need a designer to create a mockup for your website = the way it looks and feels to offer an optimal user experience. This design is done once by a Web Designer. Obviously, it might be improved over several iterations. The design it is passed to the Frontend Developer for implementation.
    4. (optional) a Tester. Someone (who don't need to have programming skills) to test the s#it out of you website before releasing it to the public. Obviously, you could do this yourself, but if you could find someone who has experience it is better. Probably you won't "see" the corner case use cases at first.
    5. NOTE: There are developers who have the skills to implement both: backend and frontend. A common name for this job description would be: Fullstack Developer, but I know a lot of people who are able to do all this task, who entitle
    themselves simply: "Web Developer"

To conclude, you should look for a web developer, but be aware of what you need to get the job done and ask him about both his backend and frontend skills.

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

To be honest, you can build it with zero programming cost. There are many free scripts out there which can do this for you. It is always better to use an established script than build one from scratch ( not to mention the huge cost involved ). Here is an eg : http://www.phpmotion.com/

but only if you want to do what everyone has done already.
If the OP has a new approach to social media there won't be a script available.
And there is always the tradeoff between time and money. If you want to launch anytime soon then you need to spend some money.

According to my point of view web designer is best because web designer have both skills which required by designer and programmer.Because designer can design web pages and have knowledge about programming but programmer only knows how to code.

Not to mention all the soi-disant designers who are talent-free zones. ;-P
