Do I need to know HTML and CSS if I use WordPress?

I'm going to be putting together my first website. I would like to know if I'll need to know HTML and CSS in order to perform basic maintenance and editing. In order to help answer that question, I'll describe what the purpose of my website is:

I'm thinking about starting one or maybe two different sites. The first one will be a basic blog. I would like to be able to add and remove videos and pictures to the blog whenever the need arises. The second site would be one where I sell a product or two, or an e-commerce site. I'll want to be able to add and remove images and videos, too.

I've heard a lot of good things about WordPress. People say that it's pretty easy to set up and maintain. In order to meet my objectives, would I need to know HTML and CSS?

WP can be a solid script to both of blogs/sites. But you better learn the basic CSS stuff, because you'll need it sooner or later :)

When we talk about website, even how easily that CMS you still need to learn the basic of HTML and CSS.

    Hi Lynn,
A knowledge of both can help you. Type free css ebook and free html ebook into your internet search box and you should be able to acquire a solid knowledge base in both at no cost. w3schools is also an excellent source of help.
You also might want to try a website, and compare. Weebly and Freewebs are just a couple of good free web sites that are available. A paid webhost may prove even more satisfactory as far as ease of uploading and downloading and editing. Good Luck on your Internet Adventure.
    Much Success,
    George Pierce

It's very easy to use WP for developing sites. As for your requirements, knowledge of CSS & HTML is not required as videos, images can be handled with plugins. But, knowledge of CSS & HTML will help you to customize the theme as per your needs in future.
