Do I need to contact the other websites

I'm working on a project called A Piece of Inspiration Reloaded (http://apieceofinspiration.com/). It has thumbnails of other sites with a link to it. Here's my question. Do I need to contact the site owners to put a thumbnail and link to their site? I don't want to get in trouble :)

alexa.com and http://www.aboutus.org does it...I don't see why you would have to contact...although, i am not sure what kind of site you speak...your sig is empty :0)

The sig I see is to a redirect for hosting ... a question to wit he really didn't need an answer and just trying to generate clicks/traffic to his crap. But just in case I'm mistaken - no you don't need permission

You could always contact them with a courtesy email but the choice is yours as long as you acknowledge that the sites do not belong to you, you are fine. You do not really need to contact them if you do not want to. However, just be prepared to take screenshots down if there are any complains from the original owners.

I don't mind taking it down. I know I wont get into problems with small sites, but I'm hesitant about putting getfirefox.com, and nytimes.com

I think I'll just get rid of the big company sites, and email all the small ones when I add them :)

My directories link to hundreds of sites that I've found and added. DMOZ too. It's not a problem.

I've not seen your site but why not just use the Alexa or Thumbshots thumbnails of the sites so you do not risk any legal issues, if there is any and it will save you the thumbnail of making and updating thumbnails for each of the sites.
