Do I need Tax ID number if I need to do online retailing (i live in america)? Does it require American citizenship? Thanks for help
Yes, you do need a Tax ID. Most distributors will need one from you before they will do business with you in my experience. Online retail is a business just like brick and mortar and you'll need to treat it as such .
Citizens can usually just use their Social Security Number and claim as a 'sole proprietor' However, if you are on a work visa you probably don't have a SSN. I'm sure you can still get an ID for this purpose, just don't know how.
I have social security number dude... But the dropshipper told me i need tax id so I can charge people tax...
Oh sorry, I mean no offense...I don't know how work visas work. I am almost certain you don't need a specific Tax ID. If you are a sole proprietor (which you are unless you file paperwork) you can usually just use your SSN. You should still be able to get a tax ID though. I got this from irs.org. If you are just yourself doing business (no partners and not incorporated) you don't have to file a separate tax return for your business, I believe it is just added to your personal taxes. There is a pile of information at irs.org, but I don't have time to search through it. I suggest taking a look there and any specific websites your state has. Such as Virginia has the site: http://www.dba.state.va.us/ "the department of Business assistance" I would think most states would have a similar program.
