Do i need a VPS?

Hi, i have a network of proxies and been told to get a VPS. However ive also been told by somone who owns his own dedicated servers not to get a VPS as they are not very good. Will a VPS be better than my current hosting at the moment? My current hosting doesnt even have cPanel.

Are VPS's that bad? If i was to get one how much would it cost per month to host around 30 proxy sites?

It depends entirely on the service. My VPS (from Hosteasier) performs better than some of the dedicated servers I've tried. I'm running a dozen high-traffic sites on it (proxies).

The one drawback that I've seen is that you can't fully optimize a VPS according to the site, as compared to a Dedi. Wouldn't matter if you just want to get things running.

I love my VPS from Jumpline. I practically use it for all my sites! Way more reliable than shared, and if you want a proxy, either dedicated or VPS. If money is an issue, go for VPS. If not, go for dedicated.

I know about a VPS service which prices start as low as $9.95/month with 99.98% uptime guaranteed, but they do not allow public proxies so I guess a good VPS service will not allow you go through because you are still sharing a few resources with others so you should better go for dedicated.

Proxies are well known for their resource intensive usage. A regular/ordinary web hosting seriously couldn't even support 1 proxy site(a fairly huge one). 30 proxy sites probably require a dedicated server. 30 proxy sites will definitely cause damages to the VPS or server(shared), just soon or later.

To be a clever spender, I recommend you go to the cheapest web hosting company(MUST BE RELIABLE) that allows proxy site, order one hosting for one site and you will save a lot from getting a dedicated server with some unnecessary add ons which proxy sites doesn't need them.

You dont have to worry about the hard disk, it wont take much. You need to worry about your bandwidth and CPU RAM, it will definitely kill the server if you're stuffing 30 sites inside it.

The reason i ask about hard disk space i because i have shared hosting at the moment hosting 4 proxies. Ive gone over the limit and im on 19gb. Each of my proxies is around 3-6GB. Is this normal?

Well,if you are running proxies, then the best way is to get a VPS only.
    Get them from WDServers.
They are the best ones in their field and they offer nice services too.
    Thanks..

Weird, I'm not into proxy business but isn't that proxy script uses very little amount of space?

Could it be the "logs" which is leeching the space?

Yeah, you're right. It's like running 30 disk defragmenters at the same time on the same computer, and limiting it while having 10 more users logged in. (so nerdy:rolleyes:)

You should either go for dedicated (Cheapest are around $99 a month), or get a cheap, decent proxy host and get 30 accounts on it.

Wow thats a lot of hdd space for a proxy.....

Anyways, I'd say work up. You'll get a big shock if you jump straight to a dedicated because your profit margins wont allow for it.

Go for a VPS and slowly upgrade the VPS package. Any company who's worth their salt will be able to gracefully move your VPS to a dedicated box as you need it.

I'd recommend my provider but they don't allow proxies... (bu thats probably why they're so goddamn fast! :D)
