Do I need a dedicated server?

Do I need a dedicated server? I have a VPS server and it's been horrible, very slow. So here is some info

Daily pageviews average 80K with rare spikes up to 200K
50% of pageviews are a forum (SMF 1.1.4)
50% of pageviews are just plain html (homepage no scripts)

    Thanks.

You should get a dedicated or buy a lot of space on a managed webhost.

Or you could pay someone to manage your dedicated...

What kind of loads are you getting on the VPS? With a good VPS and a properly setup database and httpd you should be able to handle that amount of traffic.

If you do not want to take the time to configure your daemons to run at their best then it would be a good idea to get a dedicated. A full server is much more forgiving than a VPS.

I am actually kind of surprised by how many people around here are avid about getting out of the VPS hosting. This kind of hosting can be great if its setup properly with a good host. I personally do not run a single dedicated server, becuase it is not needed. I've been able to run almost anything with a VPS. The only issue I had in the past was trying to get ASP.NET running under MONO. This required a ton of RAM that my VPS did not have. For most people a VPS should work just fine.

Then again, I am a geek and look over my server logs for fun.

I hate my vps provider and I have no skills to mess with the server, I am a publisher not a computer guy.

Anyway I can see in my plesk gui that CPU loads never go over %25 so I think I might have 1 of 4 cpu's. The graph hovers around 17%. Ram usage graph seems low too, never over 260mb. But it sucks.

if you want to go with dedicated you must hire someone to maintain the server. Because all problem to dedicated server is your own responsibilites. No more hosting guy that will maintain your host..

My hosting company responded to my complaint saying they found this error

    server reached MaxClients setting

and they will increase the setting. I hope it helps. If not I will have to do something.

maxclients is a setting in apache (also in proftpd, but thats not it). This tells me that you are running a *NIX variant, probably Linux.

My suggestion would be to find someone to manage your server or VPS. They will take care of all of the "computer guy" issues.

Yes it's apache. I read a little about the error and hopefully increasing maxclients will help. I should know soon how it goes.

I think you should bump it up to a dedicated..dedicated is certainly better than VPS.

If you don't mind me asking, why? Apache on Windows is bloated and is not the best tool for the job. The reason one should use a Windows server is to run IIS and ASP(.NET). If you are running apache then it should be on a *NIX variant.

FYI they said the doubled the value. So far so good. My RAM usage graph is up from 260mb to 360mb and cpu looks more active too.

It seems your VPS is overloaded with more than enough VPS. Try changing provider, and if it still doesn't solves, you need a dedicated which is expected to work fine.

I think you need a good VPS... as the traffic details you mentioned... is quite workable on VPS

Good quality VPS would solve your problem

I am also only a full time publisher since 10+ yrs - but a year ago I moved to a root server - all done w/o admin or so.
human brain can learn and adapt and grow !! a day has 24hrs to learn and work until all is managed.
if you first have the server OS on your local machine and get to know ALL, then a move is easy for all and more than worth any extra effort or sleepless nights.

the result was an instant 30% increase in traffic thanks to a hosting outside USA resulting in traffic without censorship by foreign countries - meanwhile double traffic from a year ago. adsense pays for all including overtime as server admin!

latest when you have regularly 5000+ unique daily visitors the move to a root server is well worth the additional efforts.
