I have heard that you do not have to submit your website to google and in fact they will find you and if you site has good quality they will add you without you having to sumbit your site to them kinda like google. Has anyone heard anything about this? I think I heard about this over at v7n forums.

Based on your title, I'm guessing this was just a typo, but please note that DMOZ is not Google. Questions about Google should probably be asked in the Google thread.

Rather than relying on what you may read on various forums, I suggest using the most reliable source of information about DMOZ, the public documents, which has a section about the exact question you have asked. :)

In summary, volunteer editors have many ways of finding sites to build the directory, including browsing the web, looking at magazines and newspapers, watching TV etc etc. However, suggestions of suitable sites are welcome, as these form a resource editors can use if they choose.

If your site adds great value to the visitor, maybe yes.

I see written in a number of place that more than half the sites that get added to DMOZ were never submitted in the first place.

I think any actual statistics are simply a guess, because I don't know that such records are kept, but it is certainly true that many hundreds of thousands of sites have been found and listed despite never being suggested.

Speaking for myself, I have added about 25,000 sites to the directory, and probably only a few hundred of those had been suggested for review. That's why we keep repeating that DMOZ is not a listing service. :)

In my humble opinion - You have the same chance of getting in either way - Pick one...

I think if the section has a editor it has a better chance of being added, if it doesn't, then I would submit my site or try to be an editor and add it yourself, if you have the free time and your interested.

If you don't submit your site yourself, it's down to a DMOZ editors or staff to find your site and manually add it. It is possible, yes, but your chances are extremely small.

If your site does not have much page rank or authority a dmoz editor may never come across it. Do submit your site to the appropriate category to make sure it does come across their screen.

If you are a small time website you have to go through the process. Google doesn't care about you that much, not enough to search you out anyway. I accidentally deleted my dummy html file and fell off the search page completely for awhile. DMOZ is a separate issue. How important it is may be a better question, but I would go ahead and apply anyway. Can't hurt.

They spider the crap out of forums though. Google bots are on my forum twice a day! Pretty crazy. It is listed through my main url, but I never actually site-mapped it or anything. That's why some forums are good for temporary SEO purposes. If your content is keyword rich and relevant, you will usually show up on a relevant listing somewhere for awhile.

I usually always use my YouRockRadio name on every sign up instead of like what I did here. The only reason I stayed with this name at DP is that I had this account before I had You Rock Radio. I kind of wish I could change it at DP and keep all of my work here, but I know that can't happen. (or can it? ) I sure would like it if I could though. I ALWAYS use YouRockRadio on every sign up rather than some weird user name. It's my brand, so I use it everywhere.
